Hilarious. My freshman year in college, the girls on our floor got all the guys into Days of Our Lives. Like, really into it. The whole floor would watch together.

Also, fun fact: Agnes Nixon, the woman who created All My Children and One Life to Live, lived in my town. I know her daughter a little. She based the towns in the shows on our area, a region outside of Philly called the Main Line.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHO AGNES NIXON IS TO ME! And that more than a "fun fact." That is life-altering news! Tell her daughter I said hi!

This was hilarious. I too grew up on soaps. When I was an actor I had a friend on a soap. She told me that the actors would get nervous if their character had a sniffle— it could mean they’d be out of a job soon.

OMG you had a friend on a soap???? An ABC soap (because those filmed in NYC)???? It was my DREAM to be on a soap. Not blockbuster movies, not Broadway-- SOAP OPERAS (All My Children, ideally.) Beggars can't be choosers though. One Life to Live would have been okay too.

Being on a soap was a dream gig for any NY actor. Work was steady and pay was good.

I think it was Guiding Light. Jeffrey came very close to getting a role as a guitar-playing rapist. It was between him and another guy but one of the writers had a crush on the other guy so he booked the gig. That guitar playing rapist actor died about 15 yrs later of a cocaine addiction.

“a guitar playing rapist!” I love how matter of fact you say it! 😂😂😂

“Don’t worry, you won’t be alone. Nine out of ten times your nemesis will be nearby to help you deliver the baby.” My stomach hurts from laughing. Or maybe I’m in labor?

Oh gosh, Margaret, someone might have implanted a baby inside you! Better find a nice pile of pine needles before it's too late! Thank you for reading!!

Every day after school I’d come home and my mom would be watching Guiding Light. I never learned anything from it because I was too busy doing homework. It seems I missed out on the real life lessons

Oh I bet some of those life lessons subliminally got through. For instance, does the name REVA conjure any emotions? How about SPAULDING? Have you ever wanted to visit a town or city named SPRINGFIELD?

This was so good! I watched All My Children and General Hospital with my mom, I am literally prepared for anything 😂

Fellow AMC'ers unite Oh you are definitely prepared! I was laughing so hard writing this thinking of all those classic storylines! And how Erica was running this publishing conglomerate from tiny little Pine Valley. And all those giant mansions and penthouses! Ahhh Pine Valley...

Yeah, in hindsight, it made no sense at all but that makes me appreciate it so much more! haha

Did you ever watch the reboot on HULU years ago? It was...not good. But you could tell the writers were all excited to use swear words. There were constant gratuitous "shits" and "bitches" dropped into dialogue.

NO! Is it still there? I feel it may deserve a watch out of respect!

I often think about how if aliens watched our TV shows and visited our art museums, they'd have no idea how human babies are birthed or fed. And how terrified they'd be the first time they saw the real process, and how much sympathy they'd have for women.

Clearly we need aliens to visit! Now, if they watched soaps, they'd probably laugh at how we portrayed them--- soaps love a good alien abduction storyline almost as much as a new mom in a well story!

Ahhhh Port Charles in upstate NY! I always knew a little about what was happening on GH because it was advertised during AMC. Lots of life lessons from that one!

I watched soap operas everyday afterschool with my mom. And yes, it was probably not appropriate but the life lessons! This post brought me so much joy in a trip down memory lane.

Yesssss. I, too, learned all my wisdom in my youth from soaps. Watched them with my grandma… they’re how she learned to speak English! Loved all the baby snatching, the devil being everywhere, and those shady doctors!!!
